The Mad Lancers Won a Stabby Award!

I am delighted to report that my latest powder mage novella, The Mad Lancers, won a Stabby Award! For those of you that don't know, the Stabby Awards are the yearly tradition of my favorite online community, /r/fantasy. They give out Stabbies for a bunch of different categories, including Best Debut Novel, which was won by Promise of Blood in 2013.

The Mad Lancers, a story that explores the history of the Fatrastan war hero Mad Ben Styke, won Best Novella this year. I couldn't be happier or more grateful to the fans. Thanks guys!

Upcoming Event: LTUE

This weekend (February 15th, 16th, and 17th) is LTUE; a small science fiction and fantasy convention in Provo, UT. I will be in attendance for all three days. Because of the absurd concentration of authors in Utah, it might be the highest author-to-fan ratio of any con so it's a good chance to come and meet cool people and maybe learn yourself a thing or two at one of the many panels. You can see the guest list here.

My schedule is as follows:

Friday:

  • 2PM; Effective Networking for Authors and Artists in room Zion
  • 3PM; How I Got My Agent in room Arches
  • 7-9PM; Mass Author Book Signing in Exhibit Hall A

Saturday

  • 4PM; Making Money on the Side in room Elm

Siege of Tilpur for Sale

Hey all! Siege of Tilpur, an old powder mage short story of mine that was originally only available in the UNBOUND Anthology, is now available for individual purchase. Chronologically, it's the very first written event in the Powder Mage Universe. Here's the cover copy:

It is the height of the Gurlish Wars. Sergeant Tamas, a young infantryman in the Adran Army, struggles to keep his squad alive despite the blundering incompetence of their superior officers. Not only does Tamas have the curse of being an ambitious commoner in an army where rank is purchased rather than earned, he is also a powder mage. His magical ability to manipulate gunpowder is frowned upon by officers and feared by Privileged sorcerers.

When the Adran Army is about to give up on the siege of an enemy fortress, Tamas seizes upon the opportunity to prove his worth as a strategist and mage. But breaking the enemy on his own won’t be easy, no matter how strong he is.

Find your links below.

A note on pricing: some of you will notice that Siege is only about half the length of my normal novellas, but still priced at the same $2.99. I waffled on this a lot, but the fact is that any self-pubbed books sold on Amazon for less than $2.99 make only a 35% royalty, rather than a 70%. Pricing Siege at $.99 (for instance) would have meant it made 1/6th the amount of money, rather than 1/3rd. After paying for cover art and ebook conversion, it just wouldn't have been worth it. Hope you guys understand!

Cyber Monday Signed Book Sale 2017!

It's time for the annual Cyber Monday Signed Book Sale! As in previous years, some author friends and I have gotten together to offer holiday prices on signed books directly from our websites. This means you can get signed books at a discount, and also send a little more money toward your favorite authors during this holiday season. *My sale ends Wednesday, 12/13*

This year, the participants are Bradley BeaulieuJason HoughMicheal Sullivan. Check out their sales!

As for my own books, here's what I have for sale this year:

Siege of Tilpur

People have been asking me for quite a while where they can get their hands on Siege of Tilpur, a Powder Mage story that has previously only been published in the UNBOUND Anthology. Well here's a little surprise for you: get it free, now! More details below.

Siege of Tilpur will be free for the next couple of weeks, after which you can pick it up on the usual channels for $2.99. It's a short story of about 11K words that takes place decades before Promise of Blood and follows one of Tamas's adventures during the Gurlish Wars while he was just a sergeant.

For those curious about my website store: you don't have to input any credit card info to pick up the free item (and you can enter a fake address if you want). I do it this way so that people have the chance to opt-in to my newsletter, which feels like a pretty good deal for a free short story. Hope you all enjoy!

Wrath of Empire Cover!

I've been getting a lot of questions about book two lately, and I can finally give you all a bit more of an official answer! I'm pleased to announce that Wrath of Empire will be in stores on March 6th, 2018. Here is the cover copy, pre-order links, and finally the damned awesome cover!

The country is in turmoil. With the capital city occupied, half a million refugees are on the march, looking for safety on the frontier, accompanied by Lady Flint's soldiers. But escaping war is never easy, and soon the battle may find them, whether they are prepared or not.

Back in the capital, Michel Bravis smuggles even more refugees out of the city. But internal forces are working against him. With enemies on all sides, Michael may be forced to find help with the very occupiers he's trying to undermine.

Meanwhile, Ben Styke is building his own army. He and his mad lancers are gathering every able body they can find and searching for an ancient artifact that may have the power to turn the tides of war in their favor. But what they find may not be what they're looking for.

THE MAD LANCERS early release

Looking forward to the new Powder Mage novella based around a young Ben Styke? It'll be out for general release on September 6th... OR you can pick it up right now by buying direct from my website! Your download will come with an epub, mobi, and PDF file of the new novella.

For those curious why you should buy direct, here's a breakdown of where your money goes depending on where you purchase a $2.99 novella:

  • My Website: $2.60 goes to me, $.39 goes to store fees
  • Amazon: $2.06 goes to me, $.93 goes to Amazon
  • Nook: $1.94 goes to me, $1.05 goes to Nook
  • Apple: $1.78 goes to me, $1.21 goes to Apple and Draft2Digital

A difference of $.54-$.82 doesn't sound like much, but it adds up to a lot of Chipotle over a few thousand sales!

The Mad Lancers

After a long wait, the next Powder Mage novella is almost here! The Mad Lancers is the story of a young colonial lancer named Ben Styke. It will be released September 6th, 2017. You can pre-order now!

  • Amazon
  • Kobo
  • iBooks
  • Nook - forthcoming
  • Hardcover - forthcoming
  • Audiobook - forthcoming

 Here's the cover copy:

In the colonial cities and towns of Fatrasta, peace has never been easy. Immigrants fight amongst themselves or turn on the native population, while the governing power of the Kez Army steps in only to enforce the will of apathetic local governors assigned by a distant crown.

Young war hero Ben Styke commands a colonial garrison in a sleepy frontier suburb. When the governor’s cruel brother stops for the night, rising continental tensions force Styke to protect the people of his town in a brutal escalation that threatens to destroy everything—and everyone—he has fought for.

Occurs twelve years before the events in Sins of Empire.
